Supporting new and existing employees from different nationalities, races and sexual orientations is about more than making them feel welcomed; it is a means of engender- ing trust among staff, building relationships, and a means to greater profitability and a higher degree of employee retention. Some industries are known for their leadership in D&I, such as software, insurance, communications, banking, and retail. Others, like the energy sector, are lagging. Although there has been some increase in the share of women in the American oil and gas workforce – an increase from 16 percent in 2018 to 19 percent in 2021 – the resource sector has a way to go with hiring more women and minorities. “D&I must become a priority for the energy sector to be able to meet the demands placed on energy resources and optimize human capital,” writes Resource in Focus’s Anne Lindert- Wentzell in this issue’s An Energy Sector in Transition: How Diversity and Inclusion Will Meet the Challenges. Replacing the plant will be two new solar projects named Iron Point and Hot Pot. Approved by the Public Utilities Commission of Nevada, the solar projects will be constructed in Valmy, some 35 miles from Winnemucca. In total, the new projects will provide about 600 megawatts of energy. According to NV Energy – which has a service territory of 45,703 square miles and has met the energy needs of northern Nevada for over 150 years – the utility is on track to meet the state’s renew- able energy standard of 50 percent by the end of the decade. As outlined in the company’s Advancing Climate Solutions – 2022 Progress Report (formerly the Energy & Carbon Summary), the company aspires to build on Net Zero via Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions, and build on its 2030 emission reduction plans. This includes Net Zero emissions for its operations in the Permian Basin and further investment in other clean energy strategies, such as carbon capture and storage, biofuels, and hydrogen. In its Executive Summary, the company states: “Our focus areas include: driving industry-leading safety and reliability; lowering greenhouse gas emission intensity; developing and sustaining lowest cost of supply through aggressive management of cost and capital efficiency; improving the mix and resiliency of our asset and product portfolios with industry-advantaged technology and investments along with targeted divestments; and engineering new approach- es and breakthroughs to reduce cost and accelerate large- scale deployment of lower-emission opportunities.” SOLAR KEEPS RISING According to a recent report from Fortune Business Insights, the market for clean solar power is slated to hit US$293 billion by 2028, an increase from US$184.03 in 2021. With countries like the United States, China, and Spain adopting solar energy, the market for photovoltaic (PV) and concentrated solar products (CSP) is on the rise. For the solar sector, this news comes at an ideal time, with major projects underway or in the planning stages. Solar energy business and equal joint venture with BP, Lightsource, stated in January that it will soon start construction on two projects total- ling $533 million. This includes the Conway Solar project in Arkansas, and Louisiana’s Ventress Solar project. Along with creating hundreds of construction jobs for local workers and bringing in some $200 million in economic benefits, the Ventress Solar project alone will abate some 450,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions per annum. 8INDUSTRY NEWS NICKEL KEEPS CLIMBING Increased demand recently resulted in nickel hitting its highest price in over a decade, recently breaking US$10 a pound. Used mainly in alloys, nickel is strong and resists corrosion, making it ideal for use in plating, jewelry, kitchenware, medical equipment, and automobile parts such as rods, gears, and crankshafts. A key metallic OIL TRENDS UPWARDS Climbing over $1/bbl (oil carrying barrel) to its highest price in seven years, oil’s recent price increase is being attributed to growing tensions in the Middle East and concerns over supply as the coldest months still lie ahead. According to U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI), crude futures increased 59 cents (0.70 percent), to US$84.83 per barrel, breaking a previous two-month high of US$84.78.
